This blog has been created so the people who call McDonald County, Missouri, their home, both now and in the past, can document, and share our County's rich history. Welcome Home!

News

Neosho Daily News - Column by our own Alberta Anders!Alberta has been writing for the Society for the past decade. Her columns have been greatly enjoyed by our readers. Due to "progress" her columns have continually been edited for length, or omitted completely. Our friends from the north saved the day and Alberta's columns can now be found in the Neosho Daily News! It's great to work with such dedicated folks as those from the Newton County Historical Society as we all work together to preserve our local history! Thank you, Wes.
Closing Out the Year with a Bang! - December, 2012
The Society graciously accepted a personal request from our U.S. Senator, Roy Blunt, on December 12. Senator Blunt was in the area to dedicate the new Interstate 49, had some time to spare, and wanted to see what was going on in the Historic Courthouse on the Square!

Our Own Gerald Elkins Helps to Keep Us in Forefront of Reader's Minds in the McDonald County Press - November, 2012

Dessert Auction Funder - June, 2012
What an awesome night. Presiding Commissioner Keith Lindquist can sure sell a pie! But then, Commissioner Ronnie Walker showed them off in great fashion to help out Keith. Money raised was over $1,000. Jen Mikeska made a great meal topped off with Kenny Underwood's famous homemade bread! The media contacted us this time! Check out KODE. KOAM TV also came by, and the reporter ate Spaghetti with us! And, they ran our story twice!

Plug from Long-Time Member & Columnist Frankie Meyer
We are so grateful to Frankie who continues to support the efforts of preserving history in her home county of McDonald. Check out what she's saying here!  Need to add, though, an "outside elevator" mentioned in this column is not an option. The building, now on the National Register of Historic Places, ensures the building will visually remain as it now stands. There will be an elevator installed, but on the inside.

Making the National Registry of Historic Places

Secession Re-Enactment - 2011
  • We had quite a day with the media. Thanks to Zimmer Radio Group, and KURM Radio. We appreciate the coverage. Also, thanks to the television media! KSN and Fox 14 were both on site!
  • Secession Re-enactment & Fund Raiser. Thanks Frankie!
  • Todd Higdon even got into the spirit of things. Check out his article in the Neosho Daily.
  • Wes is hard at it attempting to gather recruits to stop us! Will he succeed? I think not! We are a strong and scrappy bunch here in McDonald County. Better not mess with us! Thanks Wes for helping us out with our Fund Raiser. The end result will be such a wonderful gathering place for all who like history and wish to preserve our heritage.... in both counties! After all, we were once part of Newton County in the first place.
  • Again, thank you McDonald County Press for the front page article about our May 21 Events. Gerald Elkins did a great job on the article, using information from an interview with our President and from Alberta's column. Alberta works hard every week to insure the public knows of our progress. What would we do without you, Alberta? You're the greatest!
  • Here is a link to the Joplin Globe! Thanks Frankie for the publicity.
  • Click here to see what KSN aired on Saturday, January 29, 2011.
  • If you have not had the opportunity to read Wes Franklin's article, it is a "must read" for your enjoyment. Wes outdid himself on this one! He is really getting into this Secession stuff! Thank you Wes! Click here.
Courthouse Restoration Project
  • The article written by Kay Hively appeared in the Daily on February 11, 2011, page 6. Thank you Kay for such a wonderful article and what a great comprehensive job! Referenced heavily in the article are comments from Zella Collie, who is an honorary life-time member of the Society. Zella is one of three life-time memberships awarded for her dedication and efforts in the establishment of the Historical Society in the late 1960s. Check it out here.
  • There is no way to post a link to the McDonald County Press, but we especially want to thank Rick for doing such a bang up job on the article that appeared in the paper on February 5, 2011. We made the front page! Thank you Rick!
